After an eight-year hiatus, the Pakistan women’s national football team made a triumphant return to international football in 2022. They made an immediate impact in the 2022 SAFF Women’s Championship, clinching a historic 7-0 victory over the Maldives. Nadia Khan, a UK-based footballer, was the star of the match, scoring four goals and etching her name in history. This victory not only marked Pakistan’s resurgence on the international stage but also signaled the immense potential of the team.

Nadia Khan’s Record-Breaking Performance

Nadia Khan’s four-goal haul against the Maldives was a landmark achievement, making her the first Pakistani woman to score four times in a single international match. Her performance placed her among the nation’s top goal scorers, joining the ranks of Hajra Khan and Malika-e-Noor. Her success has inspired young footballers across the country and underscored the importance of overseas talent in strengthening the national squad.

Historic Win in Olympic Qualifiers

April 2023 saw another milestone as Pakistan secured their first-ever competitive victory in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, defeating Tajikistan 1-0. The match-winning goal was scored by Zahmena Malik, the British-born forward maestro. This victory was a testament to the team’s growing confidence and ability to compete at higher levels.

Grassroots Initiatives

Football at the grassroots level is thriving, thanks to initiatives like the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League. Founded in 2018 by sisters Karishma and Sumaira Inayat, this league provides a rare platform for girls aged 14-21 to engage in competitive football in Pakistan’s northern regions. Their efforts have been documented in the film Girls Move Mountains, which showcases their determination to empower young women through sports and challenge traditional norms. The league has been instrumental in developing talent and encouraging more girls to take up football despite societal constraints.

Maria Khan

Maria Khan, the current captain of the national team, player of Saudi club Eastern Flames FC has emerged as a true leader. She was named Player of the Tournament in a four-nation event held in Saudi Arabia, demonstrating her ability to command the midfield and lead by example. Her leadership extends beyond the pitch, as she advocates for the growth of women’s football in Pakistan. Born in the United States to a Pakistani-American father, Maria moved as an adult to the UAE, and played friendlies for the gulf state’s national team, before representing her country on international stage.

Hajra Khan

Joining her in the ranks of trailblazers is Hajra Khan, one of Pakistan’s most decorated women footballers. A former captain and prolific goal scorer, Hajra has consistently fought for better facilities, recognition, and opportunities for female footballers. She played as a striker and midfielder, captained Pakistan’s National team in 2014. After years of inactivity of Pakistan Women’s Football, Hajra returned to the national team, played as a player in SAFF 2022 championship. The captaincy was given to Maria Khan. Hajra’s activism has brought global attention to the struggles of women’s football in Pakistan. She is currently for Pakistan Army FC.

Malika-e-Noor

Another star is Malika-e-Noor, a key figure in the national team’s defense and midfield. Her experience and determination have made her an integral part of the squad, proving that Pakistani women footballers have the skill and passion to excel on the international stage. Malika scored the 89th-minute winning goal from the penalty spot in the team’s first competitive victory, at the 2010 SAFF Women’s Championship. She announced retirement from international football In 19 July 2024, citing unfair treatment. Nowadays, she plays for Islamabad-based club Legacy Women’s FC.
